Del Mar boasts of a population of 4,389 residents, a racetrack and a gorgeous ocean vista, Del Mar is a wealthy enclave, just up the beach, north, from La Jolla. “Imagine a romantic vacation gateway to a quiet, relaxing and scenic village on the beautiful Pacific Ocean, with charming hotels and restaurants.” I add to this description, romantic and inviting venues for a wedding. In fact, my wife, Silvia, and I were married in Del Mar, and it’s the place we come to from time to time for a walk, while reminiscing about our wedding ceremony at L‘Auberge Del Mar Resort & Spa.
L‘Auberge Del Mar Resort & Spa
L’Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa offers a breathtaking venue for a wedding. As you enter the L’Auberge, you find yourself in the lobby, which is appointed with comfortable couches and a bar nearby; the lobby continues into an outdoor deck area overlooking the ocean. The facility is not huge by standards of the Hilton Del Mar, where there are sprawling, large banquet rooms. It’s intimate and well appointed, with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Weddings can take place on the upper deck, or in one of the banquet rooms. There is both a comfortable homey feel to the place, as well a sense of elegance and luxury.
On July 1, 1990, Silvia and I were married on the upper deck of the L‘Auberge. Our mid-day wedding was attended by about 130 or so guests. The Huppah faced the ocean and we were gifted with a comfortable breeze. My beautiful bride was shining and I was filled with emotions to the point of tears, and very happy at the same time. My dear friend and mentor, Rabbi Erwin Herman, officiated—his humor and down-to-earth presence made for a perfect ceremony. Before the ceremony began, Silvia and I, along with our families, had our pictures taken in the L’Auberge garden area. The hotel staff was spectacular in accommodating our desires with excellent service, friendliness and a desire to help us make our wedding a great celebration. As I think of the L’Auberge, I associate it with a sense of luxury—not ostentatious–and intimacy. A fabulous venue for a wedding!
Hilton Del Mar
If you are looking for a venue in Del Mar that is a little further inland but can accommodate a large wedding party, Hilton Del Mar might just be the place for you. It offers large banquet halls, where the ceremony as well as a wedding meal can be held. The Hilton is close to the freeway, so that it’s very accessible to your wedding guests. By the way, if you desire to include horse racing as part of a post-wedding celebration, the track is essentially across the street.
Here is what the hotel tells us about itself: “The Hilton Del Mar is across from the famous Del Mar Racetrack and San Diego County (Del Mar) Fair. The property is just minutes from many sights of San Diego as the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World of California, Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Old Town San Diego, Historic Balboa Park, University of San Diego, Gaslamp Quarter, Convention Center, Qualcomm Stadium-home of the San Diego Chargers, Petco Park-home of the San Diego Padres, San Diego State University-home of the Aztec and Holiday Bowl.”
